Effectiveness of Arts Integrated Learning in Developing Conceptual Understanding in Science

Abstract Art integrated learning is an innovative approach to teaching and learning, which integrates various art forms with school subjects. It is relevant to study the effectiveness of AIL in developing conceptual understanding in science and to compare the effectiveness of AIL in developing conceptual understanding among boys and girls and high achievers and low achievers at the secondary level. A pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design was designed by the researcher taking AIL as the independent variable and conceptual understanding as the dependent variable.
In this study, gender and achievement level were used as categorical variables. The researcher selected 34 students of two sections of class 9th from Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School Dholera, M./Garh, Haryana, India as a sample. The sample of the present study was selected by purposive sampling technique but the groups were randomly assigned.
In the present study self-developed lesson plans based on AIL in science for class IX were used as teaching tool and self-developed achievement test on science as measuring tool. The experiment was conducted for 10 days in the selected school. The data collected were analyzed and interpreted. The study indicated that using AIL in classroom teaching significantly develops students' conceptual understanding in science as compared to the traditional method.
